What is filter media? What follows is the answer to the question –what is filter media, clarifies the concept of filter media. The porous substance which allows the working medium pass through but traps solid particles or liquid droplets in the filter is known as filter media. And the purpose of the design is in order to separate things from each other or purify them. Filter media is the key component of the filter, which determines the separation accuracy and efficiency of the filtering operation as well as the intensity of production and power consumption of filter. What is filter media? The following answer to the question –what is filter media, clarifies the category of filter media. There are three materials used widely in the field of industrial filter media.

1.Woven material
Woven material refers to the filter cloth and filter mesh which is made from natural or synthetic fibers or metal wire. And woven material is the most common filter media in industrial production. The materials are cheap, clean and easy to replace, letting the smallest particle size retained reach 5 ~ 65μm. Monofilament mesh which is made from polyamide, polyester or polypropylene fibers has the features of even texture, corrosion resistance. It is on the way to  replace other fabric cloth.

2.Porous solid
Porous solid includes bisque, sintered metal, sintered glass and porous plastic tubes which are boned by plastic powder. Minimum particle size retained of such materials may achieve 1 ~ 3μm. It is commonly used in the treatment to suspension containing a small amount of fine particles.

3.Accumulation media
Accumulation media, such as sand, gravel, charcoal and diatomaceous earth, is granular material. It is usually used for handling suspension of small solid content, such as city water and sugar to be purified.

In addition, Industrial filters paper can also be used in combination with the mentioned filter media to intercept fine particles in suspension in the small amount. Manufacture and application of porous polymer membranes have got tremendous developments. And porous polymers are suitable for the percolation for finer particles to get more clear fluid. The membranes which apply to filter out 0.1 ~ 1μm particles are called Millipore membranes. The membranes which apply to filter out 0.01 ~ 0.1μm particles called ultrafiltration membranes. Microporous membrane and ultrafiltration membranes are widely used in pharmaceutical, food and biochemical industries. Last but not least, when it comes to choose the Filter media, it is necessary to consider the content of solid particles in suspension and the distribution range of particle size. In addition, you should take the selection of filtration apparatus, corrosion resistance and temperature, pressure of filtering operation, and other factors into account.
